Overview

Cheeky Goose Cafe, nestled in the heart of Cowes on Phillip Island, is a vibrant and welcoming restaurant that seamlessly blends rustic charm with a lively dining experience. Housed in a repurposed building that was once a church, its spacious interior and thoughtfully designed decor create an inviting atmosphere that appeals to both locals and visitors. From the moment you step inside, the energy is palpable, making it clear why this spot has quickly become a favorite in the region.

The menu is a confident mix of hearty Australian classics and inventive twists, centering on robust mains like the slow-cooked lamb shank, tender buttermilk fried chicken, and smoky beef ribs. The burgers stand out, particularly the Pulled Pork Burger, slow-smoked over apple wood and layered with a smoky BBQ sauce and fresh craisin slaw that adds a subtle sweetness and crunch. For those seeking lighter options, the Bonza Burrito Bowl and mushroom risotto provide fresh, flavorful alternatives with a modern edge.

Equally impressive is their beer and drinks selection, boasting five house beers on tap from the nearby Cheeky Island Brewery, complemented by an extensive wine list and seasonal soft drinks. The cafe’s recognition as the best regional bar speaks volumes about its dedication to quality beverages, elevating the overall dining experience.

Customer feedback paints a picture of attentive, friendly service that feels personal and genuine. Service staff are consistently praised for their warm recommendations and accommodating nature, which enhances the relaxed yet vibrant mood of the space. The dining experience is further enriched by the ability to enjoy meals indoors or in a charming outdoor setting, catering to varied preferences and ensuring comfort throughout the year.

While most diners rave about standout dishes like the sticky date pudding and the delicate truffle risotto, there's also honest critique regarding the value proposition on some premium offerings — such as the steak and fried chicken — which occasionally miss the mark on execution or portion expectations. Nevertheless, the elevated flavors and atmosphere make Cheeky Goose Cafe a culinary jewel in Cowes.

Perfectly suited for tourists exploring Phillip Island as well as locals seeking a dependable spot for casual dining or celebratory meals, Cheeky Goose Cafe offers a dynamic space where great food, craft drinks, and welcoming hospitality converge. Whether you’re after a rich, smoky burger or a thoughtfully curated seasonal dish, this cafe delivers a memorable taste of the region’s vibrant food scene.

Everything we had was absolutely delicious!! The sticky date pudding was the star of the show, followed by the steak+prawn dish and truffle risotto. We were there the evening of 19 Dec 2021, the kind man who served us was outstanding and gave us great food recommendations! Would love to visit again the next time we're in the area!

The venue is open and spacious and it's great to see they have a sanitization process in place between customers. We had the fried buttermilk chicken tenders and burger and they were delicious. They have 5 Cheeky Island Brewery beers on tap plus a wide selection of wines and other beverages.

Wow a jewel in the crown of Cowes. This cafe/restaurant is amazing, from the various areas to sit to the decor. Staff are the best food service staff I have encountered in a long time. Very accommodating happy great nature of staff makes you feel like you have returned to a regular meeting space. The food and drink are fantastic. The mind blowing space everywhere you look there is something eye catching! The atmospheres is electric I sat and watched it fill up quickly during a lunch time I am sure it will be heavily booked during dinner and holidays. Be sure to check it out when you visit Phillip Island.

A lovely place to have lunch, you can dine in or outside. There are a variety of drinks you can order and they even won The best regional bar.Congratulations.You can try their own beer that they make also.I had the fried chicken,it was so moist, tender and not thickly battered. They do takeaways. It wasn't too busy when we went on a Thursday lunch. The restaurant used to be a old church and still has some of the stainless windows.

Really nice food, but room for improvement. It might be that other reviews of the fried chicken, have set an unrealistic expectation. It might be the reasonably high prices setting up the meals to fail. But, altogether I was disappointed. For just shy of forty bucks, I expect better than three prawns on an undercooked steak. Similarly with the fried chicken, it was really good, but, wasn't amazing. It tasted strongly of cinnamon and other spices. Better than KFC? Yes, by a mile. Better than regular southern style fried chicken you can get from dozens of stores in America? Not really. This place is great, and I will eat here again. I have only deducted a single star as I feel the overly inflated prices set this restaurant up to fail. They have the tourist market to get away with it, but I don't love it. For reference I am posting an image of my 'medium rare' steak, which came out 'rare'. Not a big deal if you charge $30 like every other restaurant, but a problem at $40+ Better luck next time

Food were top notch although we waited for 40 minutes as it's the Easter long weekend. However the food were worth the wait. My rump and prawns were cooked to perfection. Husband's lamb shank was full of flavour. Sis fried chicken was juicy and not dry at all. My kids had the pasta Bolognese and they gave a thumbs up. Service was great too considering the place was so busy. Highly recommend for families with children.

Food was amazing, literally every dish we ordered was five stars. The salmon fillet was the best we've ever had, crispy skin with soft underside. Portion sizes were very generous too, really good value for money. Their staff is delightful, so warm and professional. We came with three young kids including a baby, and they were all so understanding and accommodating of our needs. Tonight was a celebration for my mum's birthday and this place absolutely knocked it out of the park. Mum and dad were both incredibly happy, thank you to the team, highly recommended!

The most delicious food we've had, ordered the best buttermilk fried chicken, chicken nuggets, Prawns pasta and the yummiest Rump & Prawns dish I love love love. The service was great, was a bit quiet with a few other customers but it got packed pretty quickly. The food was so good, wanted to order more.
